On 27 August 2026 Rockstar premiered "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" on Netflix at 3pm ET, then posted it on its YouTube channel and the official game site at 9pm ET (Rockstar Newswire). It ran for roughly half an hour, all in-game footage captured on PS5, and it was the first long look at how GTA 6 actually plays. With launch less than a month away, here is what it means for anyone planning to work through the missions efficiently.
We only count something as confirmed if it was in Rockstar's footage or said by a Rockstar developer on the record. Where a detail reached us second-hand, we say so.
1. Missions are built for two, or for one
The footage confirmed that missions can be played as Jason or Lucia, and can be completed together or separately. You can switch characters mid-mission and while travelling, for example swapping between the driver and the passenger (VGC).
What it means for you: a job is no longer tied to one skill set. In a robbery shown in the presentation, one character held up a store while the other waited at the wheel. Expect walkthroughs to offer two routes for many missions, and expect it to matter who is where when things go wrong.
2. The wanted system goes to six stars
The maximum wanted level is now six stars, one more than GTA V. Police identify Jason and Lucia by their clothes, face, car and whether the pair are together. When you break line of sight, white stars turn red: police are still searching, just not chasing you directly (GamesRadar+). The search area shows as a zone on the map instead of icons for every patrol car (VGC).
What it means for you: escapes are about breaking identification, not just distance. Switching car or outfit inside the search zone is likely to work better than a long highway chase.
3. Disguises are a planning step
Players can change masks, hats and other clothing before committing a crime, which reduces the wanted level they attract (VGC). A clothing wheel, opened from the weapon wheel, lets you change on the fly (Kotaku).
What it means for you: put on the disguise before the job, and keep a clean outfit for afterwards. Our heists guide now treats this as step one.
4. The Criminal Profile remembers how you play
Separate from wanted stars, a Criminal Profile tracks your behaviour over time and does not reset when the police give up. Rockstar's head of development Rob Nelson explained that doing what a mission needs, or defending yourself, is fine: "It's when you go beyond what is necessary on a consistent basis, or you do completely unnecessary stuff consistently, that you may start to sway your criminal profile in a certain direction" (GamesRadar+).
What it means for you: Rockstar has not said what the profile changes in practice. Until the game is out, assume that unnecessary violence during missions may have consequences, and that a clean run is the safer default for a first playthrough.
5. You do not have to kill everyone
The aiming reticle signals whether a hit will kill or only incapacitate, and a context-sensitive interaction menu, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, handles people and even animals (Kotaku). Combined with the Criminal Profile, non-lethal options look like a real tool, not decoration.
6. Stealing the getaway car takes time
Car theft now involves jimmying a lock with a short mini-game. Some cars have trackers, others need a cloned key fob (Kotaku). Plan the getaway vehicle before the job; our vehicles guide has terrain-by-terrain picks.
7. Side activities that will fill the map
The presentation also showed airboat rides through the wetlands, kayaking, dirt-bike races, the gym, clubs and a streamer filming from Lucia's car (VGC). In a pre-broadcast interview, Nelson said exercise builds visible muscle and food affects weight (VGC). The full list is on our side missions page.
What the Extended Look did not settle
- Mission count and chapter structure: not given. Leaked numbers stay unconfirmed.
- Map size in square kilometres: not given. A second-hand report from a Rockstar North preview puts the map at about twice GTA V's (VGC), but there is no official figure.
- Online mode: not part of the presentation.
